Winnipeg's SHIVON ROBINSONG returns with 'SING FOR YOUR LIFE!' MARCH 12th - 14th 2004 (in Winnipeg) "Anyone can sing!" says Shivon Robinsong, co-founder of Hollyhock Retreat Center on Cortes Island, B.C., and founder/co-director of the Gettin' Higher Choir - now boasting over 300 members - many who believed they could NOT sing! Growing up in Winnipeg in a large musical family, Shivon labelled herself as the 'non-musical' one. After attending many singing workshops at Hollyhock with masters such as Canada's own Ann Mortifee and Ysaye Barnwell (of Sweet honey in the Rock), she started leading a community choir and her 'Sing For Your Life!' workshops were born, spanning Canada, the U.S. and Europe. "Singing with others is a vital source of renewal . . . something we are wired to do as humans. The secret to singing in tune is learning how to listen," says Shivon. Many have discovered how this singing also enhances communication in other areas of life, both business and personal. Shivon's workshops create an environment where people can get over a lifetime of thinking they cannot sing. The 'Sing For Your Life!' workshop focuses on singing songs from various traditions that are easy to learn, fun and uplifting to sing, in glorious three and four part harmony. Participants are lead through exercises to explore their vocal range, learning to listen and sing in tune with others. Shivon firmly believes that "we are all singers, and singing together in harmony is our birthright - a powerful source of energy, joy and connection." Shivon and the Gettin' Higher Choir have been a major inspiration to Winnipeg's Spirit's Call Choir - which also began with people who believed they couldn't sing!
